PSC sees 3rd place finish in 2011 SEAG

MANILA, Philippines - Citing more than enough time to prepare and more funding to be infused for training, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia yesterday said a better-equipped Team Philippines could be good for a Top 3 finish in the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia next year.

“I would say that our performance in the SEA Games will be much better (than the previous fifth place standing in Laos last year) because our athletes should be better prepared. We should be at least in the Top 3, not in fifth or sixth spot anymore,” Garcia said in a media briefing.

In 2009 in Laos, the Filipinos collected 38 gold, 35 silver and 51 bronze medals, good for No. 5 behind Thailand (86-83-97), Vietnam (83-75-57), Indonesia (43-53-74) and Malaysia (40-40-59).

Hampering Phl’s campaign that time was the rift between the PSC leadership and their counterparts at the Philippine OIympic Committee (POC), which resulted in a separate “PSC-backed team” and “POC-backed crew” sent to Laos.

“We’ll have one team, one delegation this time and we’ll have more time to prepare,” said Garcia, whose agency is now in the same page as the POC brass in so far as policies are concerned.

During the last edition of south east asian games in Laos, the Philippines could have finished fourth in the medal standings if not for the rift between the PSC and POC. The country could have won gold medals in cycling easily, at least 5 gold medals if not for the rift, enough to surpass Malaysia for the fourth place finish. But let us all look forward, let all those mistakes give us lessons for our country to move on and become powerhouse again in the south east asia region.

2011 SEA Games to be broadcast on Philippine TV

For the first time in nearly a decade, sports fans back home will have a chance to watch the Filipino athletes strut their wares against the best in the region in the coming 2011 Southeast Asian Games Scheduled in Indonesia this November.

Commissioner Chito Loyzaga of the Philippine Sports Commission, one of the appointed chiefs of mission of the national delegation to this year’s edition of the biennial meet, yesterday announced that talks will start soon between the PSC and the Philippine Olympic Committee, on the one hand, and giant network ABS-CBN, on the other, for the latter to cover selected events of the Games for the Filipinos to watch them right in their living room.“I, actually, had an initial talks with our friends from ABS-CBN for this purpose and we have relayed the network’s intention to POC secretary general Steve Hontiveros,” Loyzaga, eldest son of local basketball’s “Big Difference” Carlos Loyzaga disclosed during Friday’s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura. 

“Steve, for his part, told me that we in the PSC and POC will meet with our counterparts from the televisison station to discuss things out,” Loyzaga said during the public service forum, sponsoired by Coca Cola Bottling Philippines, TV-5 and FILA. 
“So, I guess, after that meeting or series of meetings, we’ll have to make representation with the Games Organizing Committee in Indonesia as to how televisison coverage of the Games will be made possible,” he said. 

If plans do not miscarry, it will be the first time since the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand that exploits of the Filipino athletes in multi-event international meet will be televized. For reasons only the POC knows, no television coverage was done in the 2009 SEA Games in Laos and last year’s Asia Games in Guangzhou, China. 

“Yes, ngayon lamang mangyayari ito sa loob ng mahabang panahon. Kung matutuloy, matutuwa na ang mga kababayan natin na sa wakas ay mapapanood na nila ang ating mga kababayan na makipagsagupaan sa ating mga kalaban dito sa Southeast Asia,” Loyzaga said.

This is good to hear that the Filipinos can watch the south east asian games this time and it is ABS-CBN who will have the exclusive coverage of the games. The last time we were able to see the games live was during the Thailand SEA Games in 2007.

Team PH could regain SEAG title - Cojuangco

MANILA, Philippines – Unless the host country scraps most of the events where the Philippines is strong at, the Filipinos can look forward to a repeat of their 2005 showing in the Southeast Asian Games.

“We are targetting the overall title,” said Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco yesterday.

The Philippines wound up overall champion for the first time in SEA Games history when it hosted the biennial event in 2005. But since then, it has fallen to sixth in Thailand in 2007 and fifth in Laos in 2009.

Philippine Sports Commission chairman said a few days ago that a third-place finish in Indonesia on Nov. 11 to 25 (11-11-11) should make the Filipinos happy.

“To be honest our target is to finish in the top three. Our performance has been improving throughout the year and we have more time to prepare for this one,” said PSC chairman Richie Garcia.

Among the medal-rich events that can be scrapped if the hosts want to are chess, billiards, taekwondo or even wushu. If these events are scrapped the Philippines stands to lose at least a dozen gold medals even before the Games begin.

I doubt that the Philippines will be on the top 3 in the medal standings in this year's south east asian games. Though I think the Filipinos will be fourth this time in the medal standings. But the good thing about this report is that the Philippine  
Sports Officials are doing what they can to regain the lost glory of the country. Anyhow, good luck team Philippines.

I believe the Philippines will be fielding its toughest and brightest athletes in this year's SEA Games in Indonesia. Landing fifth over-all during the last edition of the games in Laos, the Philippines will definitely be one of the strongest nations in the region. The Philippines has strong chances in Billiards, Bowling, Athletics, Basketball, Swimming, and Taekwondo. These are the gold mines of Filipinos in this year's SEA Games. Good luck Philippines.

One of the powerhouse in the region in SEA Games, Indonesia with no doubt will emerge as champion in this year's SEA Games which they are hosting. In SEA Games 1997 where they hosted the most spectacular event in the south east asia region, there were many controversies in judging in combative sports. So far Timor Leste has not won any gold medals in the SEA Games history. A part of Indonesia, it became independent in 2002 and they first participated in the SEA Games in 2003 in Vietnam where they did not win any medal. Though there are many events in this year's SEA Games but Timor Leste will find it hard to win a gold medal. But still, let's hope for the best for East Timor.
